For the first time in more than 70 years, four juvenile cheetahs are meowing and ambling around in the centre of India. They represent a significant advancement in the effort to resurrect the cheetah population in Indian jungles as they are the first cheetah cubs to be born in the open in the nation since the cat went extinct.
Three days before cheetah Sasha passed away from a kidney condition, on March 24, Siyaya and “rockstar” Freddie gave birth to the quartet in Madhya Pradesh’s Kuno National Park.
Who knew when Siyaya, a cheetah discovered at a waterhole in Namibia, was given her moniker that she would become the face of one of the most comprehensive efforts to restore wildlife in the world? Siyaya means “moving forward.”
It was a “wonderful moment in India’s history of wildlife conservation,” according to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Shivraj Singh Chouhan, the chief minister of the MP, and union minister Bhupendra Yadav both enthusiastically proclaimed the birth of the cheetah cubs on Twitter.
The cubs seem to be in good condition, according to a police officer. Their gender has not yet been determined. Since giving birth five days ago, Siyaya has gone on two hunts, showing that she and her pups are adjusting well to their new surroundings.
